Governor Snyder Goes to China
September 18, 2011Governor Rick Snyder heads out on his first foreign trade mission this month, choosing Japan, South Korea and China as his initial targets. His choice of China is the headline, coming as it does after eight years in which his predecessor avoided the controversial Asian giant.
Dome has had its eye on China since columnist, business consultant and former state official Tom Watkins, in his 2009 cover story, urged Michigan officials to stop whining and start building “a bridge to China.”
If this first Snyder visit to China as governor starts building what becomes an investment- and jobs-rich relationship for Michigan, then it will be seen as historic. If it doesn’t, well, it’s still an eye-catching footnote in the state’s history.
That’s why Dome asked a variety of leaders in government, business, education and the media — all deeply familiar with China and the issues involved — to evaluate the importance of the governor’s trip and even offer advice to the state’s chief executive.
