Running Over Illegal Immigrants
May 14, 2010
Imagine going to a Tea Party or Michigan Militia meeting, grabbing the microphone, and saying: “What we need is to give the police more power over our private lives in this state.
“Michigan cops need the power to demand proof of citizenship from anyone they happen to stop, for any reason. If someone can’t produce a birth certificate, or papers proving citizenship, the police should be able to arrest him and haul him off to jail.”
Depending on the mood, those words might get you tarred and feathered. That sounds like something out of Casablanca — or a scene anywhere in Nazi or Soviet-occupied Europe. My guess is that put that way, a lot of people would see such a law as still more proof of a big government conspiracy to snoop into our lives.
Yet State Rep. Kim Meltzer, a Republican from mostly blue-collar Macomb County, thinks this is exactly what Michigan needs.
Arizona passed a controversial new law this spring that gives police sweeping new powers to crack down on suspected illegal immigrants. She wants a similar law here.
“It just makes sense for Michigan, with all of its national boundaries, to enact similar security for our citizens,” she said last week. “State law enforcement officers must be given the proper level of training and authority to provide this basic level of protection.”
If you weren’t aware that Michigan has a huge illegal immigrant problem, there’s a good reason: it doesn’t.
Michigan has far fewer illegal immigrants than the national average. The U.S. Census Bureau estimated the state had only about 70,000 illegal immigrants 10 years ago, compared to a million in Texas.
Other estimates of Michigan’s illegal immigrant population are slightly higher, say about 110,000. But in any rate, the state is scarcely overrun. The Pew Hispanic Center, in fact, says the number of Michigan illegals is actually decreasing.
But Kim Meltzer, a 46-year-old small business owner from the small town of Romeo, thinks the state needs an Arizona-type law, and says she’s given a proposal to the legislative drafting service to shape into a bill. This drew swift and angry reaction.
Emily Diaz-Torres, who runs the Macomb Hispanic and International Service Center, called the proposal “absolutely unacceptable” and vowed to fight it. Kary Moss, executive director of the Michigan ACLU, said that if Meltzer’s bill ever sees the light of day, her group would fight it in both the legislature and the courts.
Why Kim Meltzer thinks illegal immigration is a major problem in Michigan is not clear. Her reference to “national boundaries” evidently means the state’s border with Canada, which is hardly porous and already monitored by customs and immigration officials.
Nor are there signs that vast hordes of Canadians, most of whom are quite happy with their country and its health care system, are plotting to slip across the river in the dead of night.
Most experts think Michigan’s real problems are the highest jobless rate in the nation and a state government that’s chronically broke. The available evidence indicates a crackdown on “illegal immigrants” could make these problems worse, not better.
The Arizona law doesn’t even take effect until July, but it has already had a heavily negative effect on the state’s economy. The Los Angeles City Council voted to ban doing business with Arizona.
Other groups were swiftly doing the same. A Phoenix city official estimated that the anti-immigrant law could cost his city at least $90 million in convention business over the next five years.
The odds would seem to be heavily stacked against Michigan enacting an Arizona-style anti-immigrant bill anytime soon.
Democrats, many of whom are members of minority groups, solidly control the state House of Representatives. Hispanic voters are most resentful of anti-immigration efforts, followed closely by Arab-Americans, who are a presence and a rising power in Michigan.
Even some Republicans are reluctant to offend these groups. They are even more leery of anything that might be seen as hurting the economy or costing the state convention business.
Why, then, is Meltzer on an Arizona-style crusade? A cynic might think it has something to do with the fact that she is now running for the state Senate, and is in a tough race against two better-known foes with solid right-wing credentials.
Jack Brandenburg is a former state representative who helped lead the fight to ban affirmative action in the state. Leon Drolet, also a former legislator, is best known for driving around Lansing towing a huge fiberglass pink pig, that he calls “Mr. Perks,” and for attempting to recall legislators who favor any kind of tax increases.
In that company, Meltzer needed to do something to distinguish herself from the crowd, and she may have calculated that illegal immigration was the best issue that hadn’t yet been taken.
But will it work for her?
Only the August primary election will tell.

What is the argument here? every single alien “BROKE THE LAW!” Our Government, Republican & Democrat, have allowed the invasion of 30 million criminals and is the largest invasion of any Nation, in direct violation of Article IV, Section IV of our Constitution.
This refusal to abide by our Constitution should be classified as Treason as grounds for impeachment & trials for Treason!
Not only have they allowed the invasion, they force American tax payers to pay Billions of dollars to provide Welfare, Prison, Educate the invaders children, free medical care, at the same time the invading horde break numerous laws, massive document fraud, & are destroying our schools, hospitals, communities, culture and standard of living while Robbing, Raping, Killing & Assaulting American Citizens WAKE UP PEOPLE! They walked, rode, swam and drove over here, they can do the same going home! taking thier anchor babies with them! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Btj6IeOFkis&feature=player_embedded

I object to the whole thing, not only the message, but the method, too.
Mr. Lessenberry, admirably, raises a hot topic, currently on the minds of the nation. His essay, has managed to drift around the core issue, while taking the time to insinuate comparisons between Tea Party advocates and the Nazis.
While he doesn‘t really come right out in favor of anything here, as a reader, I feel compelled to deduce, that he thinks illegal immigration is OK, as long as you come in through the back door, the “servants entrance,” let’s call it.
In the state of Michigan, with the nations highest unemployment, mostly made up of unskilled labor, the left suggests that it’s OK to illegally encourage more unskilled labor (who won’t pay into the almighty National Health Care scheme, by the way). As far as I know, illegal immigrants are not competing for jobs that call for whimsical writing on domemagazine.com, but I could imagine it being on the Dome “wish-list.” I’m sure the folks at Dome feel both safe, and high and mighty. It must be comforting.
What is it that the Arizona law requires? Enforcement of Federal law (gasp). There is no action to control illegal immigration that the left finds acceptable. Why is it that they just won’t come right out and say it? The “argument” is dishonesty, disingenuousness and demonizing. Bravo.

What does he mean MI doesn’t have an illigal immigration problem? Has he been to Harsen’s Island? You can swim the channel, I’ve done it. My family has had a house on the island for generations and every summer I go to visit for a couple of days. As I stand on the dock having a cig at night I hear a small out board motor putting along. When I flip on the 1,000,000 candle spot light in the boat, the motor stops. Three minutes after I turn it off, the motor starts up again. Many people on the island have had their cars stolen during the night. It makes sence, no one would suspect a car getting on the farry at 3am to leave the island, they must be going to work. 45 minutes later they’re in Detroit and might as well be on Mars as far as Border Patrol is concerned. My uncle has had his engine stolen off his fishing boat, even though he chains, locks, and bolts it on. You can’t tell me MI doesn’t have a problem, I spent two years a bouncer in suburban Chicago where I live. I must have turned away 10 illegals a night. I stopped calling them in when the cops told me they weren’t accualy doing anything. They just drive the perp (that’s exactly what they are, PERPs) down the street and let him go. He said it’s not worth the paper work. I asked one of these guys how he got in the country and all the way out here, he told me Canada. Why? because Canada don’t care, and America makes is so easy. BTW I would have reported those cops too, but this bar was in Crook (Cook) county IL, the most corrupt county in the world as far as I’m concerned.

i find it interesting that Illinois has tried and found the last 3 governors guilty of corruption. Sentencing George Ryan to prison and trying to sentence Rod Blago to jail and yet Pat Quinn just signed into law the “Dream Act” that establishes a scholarship fund for children of Illegal immigrants. While I fully realize someone brought here as a child is basically screwed I find it ridiculous for the state to SUPPORT ILLEGAL activity and yet sentence officials to prison for other ILLEGAL activities. Technically doing 56 mph in a 55 is speeding. Breaking the law is breaking the law!
