Being the Governor during the collapse of the life bread of Michigan's economy - the Automobile, has nothing to do with leadership. It has to do with bad fortune. The real question should be, who would want this job?
It is not a one State recession as has beed said in past years, it is "miserable" in many States. The "misery index is high in every State. Again, who would want to be the Governor during these times?
Good luck to the next boss. They are going to need it. In 1982 -1987, you could relocate to southern States and find work. You can't go anywhere and find work these days unless you possess specific employment qualifications.
We are all in sad shape.

Skubick's column captures the essence of the lack of leadership by Granholm. Being nice and positive are good things but not what makes one a leader. Even being smart doesn't make one a leader. Surrounding yourself with "yes" folks is the antithesis of leadership.

So, what's the point of kicking Granholm while she's down (and almost out)? I suppose it's so we all learn from the experience.

I don't have time to look up the 1982-1987 U.S. "misery index" statistics, but the unemployment and inflation fell by about half or more during that period. So, imagine if Reagan's State of the Nation in 1982 had said, "In five years, you're gong to be blown away! (And in another two, so will the evil empire.)"
